In How to Be a Lady: A Beginner's Guide, I am pushing back at what is seen as lady-like by society through portrait and self-portrait photographs. In society there are so many restrictions at what is deemed as lady-like and any woman seen doing, wearing, or acting outside of those parameters is deemed as masculine or less of a woman. I disagree with this. Femininity shouldn’t have these constraints and should be displayed how each woman sees fit. With this in mind I am using guidelines for how a lady should act as the title of the images and having the women in my photographs do the exact opposite. The push back responses to these strict guidelines directly relates to them and how they move throughout the world. Whether or not the viewer sees these women’s actions as feminine, I will also be using the color pink throughout the project to convey the femininity that is still present.
