In my practice I think about the body as an art form and tend to focus on its curvatures and lines. In this project Hand Portraits I photographed hands whether it be the details of their palms, the muscles and veins protruding underneath their skin’s surface, or the way each person chose to adorn their hands in jewelry or tattoos. Though the physicality of their hands are important, it is more about the relationship each person has with their hands. People’s relationship with their hands varies so much and I think it is interesting to read about these relationships and see this be expressed through their hands in the way their hands are constructed or the way they hold them. So much personality comes through a person’s hand which I wanted to make sure was visible. The posing of each group of hands is natural and related to the person and how they like to express themselves. One common factor that holds all these hands together is that each hand belongs to a studio artist. All these hands are used to express creativity which I find fascinating. Whether that be strong muscular hands for dealing with heavy materials or dainty hands for handling small fragile objects, the materials they use are engraved into their hand’s structure.
